Symbian S60 Killer Apps

What Every Symbian S60 phone should have

Its a good time for Symbian S60. There was a time, when I have to admit, I was worried about Nokia and S60. No I am not going to talk about clamshells, or smartphones with bluetooth but no handsfree profile (7650, the first widely available MMS camera phone)... no I am talking about when all you could get from Nokia to attract you away from shiny touchscreen smartphones from Sony Ericsson and the masses of Microsoft mobile variants available at the time, was a 176x208 non-touch screen with about 3 colours (there were more) on a phone like the 6600 and 6680, or even the N70 that were the size of a P990i...

Those days have long gone, we have N95s with 8gb of memory, GPS and a screen that could attract insect from space on a clear night. The line-up grows on, with the more affordable N82 adding a better flash and quicker GPS, while still keeping even the accelerometer of the N95. All these mean great applications. Continuing from the main page, as while, and to drill home the point, even the Nokia Beta Applications page alone has enough killer apps to keep the average technologist from even thinking about socialising or venturing outdoors for days. So lets starts:

  • Nokia Music PC Client. This is a welcome addition. imagine the disappointment when upgrading from an N95 to an N95 8GB, and the copying all the same music and the .M3u playlists over, for some reason the phone would not play ball... I have fiends in the music industry who enjoy making playlists. They do it on countless apps with custom radio stations, they do it on myspace, and they are probably creating a new playlist on their phone while others are checking their email and sending texts... They have playlists for jogging in the sun, jogging in the mountains, and probably jogging while hungover through a dodgy neighbourhood (there has to be some use for drum and base, never found it yet). I just enjoy listening to music, and not having to worry about what comes next, or waste time collating them. Send me all your playlists, just upload your M3U file to myspace and we will listen if we want to, and share your playlists... these are killer apps, and there has to be some benefit to having skint friends in the music industry other than the occasional wadge o0f free CDs!
  • Location Tagger (covered here)
  • Mobile Web Server. Coming soon. an update of the old sensor app, imaging your phone as a blogging tool, allowing you, your friends and others to access the parts of the phone you want them to via a web server.
  • Mobile Codes. 2D barcodes for mobile cameras to convert to links, cheaper than sending (or integrating) SMS links on your site to send links to mobiles... here is one for this site. text "i-nigma" to: +44 7781 489340 to get a reader for most phones.

mobile 2d bar code

There are more killer apps on this site, more reviewed here and more coming soon.
